Caring for your Candles

Do you trim your wick?

If you would have asked me how I care for my candles a few years ago, I would have replied: I light the candle, I blow it out when I've had enough or I'm going out of the house, then I repeat. No trimming the wick. No wick snuffer. No re-centring the wick. I didn't know what a 'clean burn' looked like or even meant.

That's the reason my luxury candles would never 'work properly'. The scent wouldn't fill the room like I had been promised by the luxurious brand I purchased from. It was all down to how I treated the candle. As crazy as that sounds!

Looking after your candle is extremely important to ensure you get the best performance.

First of all, there's something you need to know: candles have a memory. Especially soy candles. And how you treat them during their first burn determines how they perform for you for the rest of their candle life.

The First Burn
Also known as 'the most important burn of your candle's life'. It's this burn that sets the precedent for future burns. First, trim the wick to 5mm (using your wick trimmers). Burn for 2 - 4 hours at a time - ensure the melt pool reaches the edge of the candle container before extinguishing. This prevents a 'tunnelling' effect, and preventing this on the first burn helps have even-burns throughout the candle's life.

We don't recommend burning your candle for longer than 3-4 hours at a time. This is because if the wick burns too long at one time, carbon can collect on the wick, causing the wick to get too large and your candle will begin to smoke, overpowering the fragrance of your candle.

Extinguishing the Flame
We advise using a candle snuffer to safely extinguish the flame of your candle. Using a candle snuffer stops the wick from being pushed into the wax, something that occurs when you blow out a candle. It also prevents soot building up on the candle container. We do not recommend blowing out your candle - wax may splash and your wick may emit a small amount of smoke (perfectly normal if you extinguish your candle by blowing). Using a snuffer ensure a clean extinguish.

Following these steps each time means you get the best performance, a clean burn and amazing scent throw each time you light that little bit of luxury.

Remember:
Candles are sensitive to light, so keep away from direct sunlight.

Keep candles away from any draughts. They perform better in still air - draughts cause an uneven burn.
Always burn your candle in sight and on a heat resistant surface.
Keep your candles away from children and pets.
